Why The V-Turn Matters

The V-Turn is one of the most important foundational skills in player development. It teaches players how to control the ball with balance, coordination, and intention, not just speed.

To execute a clean V-Turn, a player must:
- Stay balanced over the ball
-
Adjust body shape to protect possession
- Coordinate both feet in tight space
- Use the inside and sole of the foot with precision
- Move efficiently while changing direction

These qualities show up everywhere in the game — receiving under pressure, escaping defenders, turning away from traffic, and keeping the ball close in tight moments.

Make sure the recording is at least 80 seconds (10 seconds before start and 10 seconds after) and submit your challenge for scoring via social media by tagging us @pennsoccerprospects or sending it to lee@pennsoccerprospects.com

Why The L-Turn Matters

The L-Turn is a key foundational skill that helps players change direction sharply while staying in control of the ball. It develops clean footwork, body shape, and the ability to move the ball away from pressure with purpose.

To execute a strong L-Turn, a player must:
- Maintain balance while shifting weight
-
Open and close their body shape at the right moment
- Coordinate the inside of one foot with the sole of the other
-
Keep the ball within a tight control window
- Move efficiently into space after the turn

This skill is especially valuable when receiving with pressure from behind or to the side, allowing players to escape quickly without losing momentum.

Make sure the recording is at least 80 seconds (10 seconds before start and 10 seconds after) and submit your challenge for scoring via social media by tagging us @pennsoccerprospects or sending it to lee@pennsoccerprospects.com

*Note: Two separate challenges - #1 - dribble straight through gates, #2 (shown in video): turn in each gate.

Why Gate Dribbling Matters

The Gate Dribbling Challenge focuses on close control, precision, and sharp changes of direction in tight spaces. It encourages players to stay connected to the ball while navigating through obstacles with intent and awareness.

To be successful, a player must:
- Keep the ball close to the feet at all times
-
Change direction quickly while maintaining balance and posture
-
Use a variety of foot surfaces — inside, outside, and sole
- Adjust touches based on space, angle, and entry point
-
Stay composed while moving in multiple directions

Gate dribbling develops a player’s ability to manipulate the ball in crowded areas, escape pressure, and reposition their body efficiently around the ball.

The Steps

Why 5-10-5 Matters

The 5-10-5 Turning Challenge is designed to develop a player’s ability to change speeds and directions while staying in control of the ball. It combines dribbling, running with the ball, stopping, and turning — all core actions that occur repeatedly in real game moments.

To perform this challenge well, a player must:
- Adjust stride length and touch selection at different speeds
- Stay balanced when decelerating and re-accelerating
-
Control their body shape during stops and turns
-
Use the correct surface of the foot based on distance and speed
- Transition smoothly between dribbling and running with the ball
-
This challenge reinforces the ability to recognize when to push the ball forward and when to bring it back under close control — a key decision-making skill in the game.
